A walking foot is for feeding the workpiece through a sewing machine as it is being stitched typically used for sewing batting, quilt sandwiches, knits, and other tricky/slippery materials.

The walking foot gives you an extra set of feed dogs for the top of the fabric. Using this foot makes managing difficult fabrics manageable.
