Garment Class: Introduction to Making Clothes

The next level in your sewing journey starts with actually sewing clothes. During this project based sewing series, students will learn about how to read and navigate a commercial pattern, a bit about measurements and fitting, pinning, layout and cutting. Then starts the construction phase of pressing, seam allowances, seam finishes, facings, elastic waistbands, pockets and hemming. The first class will focus around constructing the Elegant Tee, the next garment will be about sewing the Picasso pants (easily altered), and the last 3 classes we will sew the Ikina 2 Jacket (a simple kimono style jacket that can be a robe too). These three projects incorporate many essential techniques you will use to make your own clothes successfully, plus you will have a library of very usable patterns to make many times over! This class is for both women and men. There is alternative pattern choices for men.

Any machine brand is welcome, but you must know how to wind a bobbin, thread it, and change the feet. If your don't own a machine yet, call the store and borrow one first before purchasing one just for this class. Consider the University of Sewing for your machine purchase
as we have many machines better than big box stores for a better price. If you have never used a sewing machine but really want to sew - wonderful! But you will need to take the Sewing Machine Demystified course first. Call the store with any questions about the course, supplies or machines, please email uofsalicel@gmail.com.

Please Note: There will be homework to finish each week. You're always welcome to bring your project into one of our Open Sew sessions to continue working on it in the store.

Fabric and supplies will need to be purchased at the University of Sewing. Students receive a 20% discount on class supplies. *If you have the supplies, you don't need to purchase new ones.
