Beginning Sewing: Pinwheel Mug Rug and Placemat

Have you been wanting to learn how to sew simple, fast gifts? Come to this Make and Take event! Rachel will show you how to create two simple projects for your home table: a rainbow pinwheel mug rug, and a placemat using the same technique. Whether you are a seasoned sewist, a complete newbie, or you just want to return to a beloved hobby after an absence, this class is for you!

All materials are included! You only have to bring yourself and your curiosity!

Sewing machines and thread will be included in the cost of this class, but attendees MUST have a basic understanding of how to operate a sewing machine. If you do not know, or need a refresher course, please check out our Sewing Machine Demystified class, or schedule a private lesson with one of our instructors. We'll be happy to help you out!

NOTE: Children aged 11 and older ARE welcome to attend, but we reserve the right to request that a parent be present the entire time. We WILL be using rotary cutters, scissors, and hot irons, so please be aware of these potential dangers in regards to your child.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: You must have a basic understanding of how a sewing machine works. University of Sewing will provide sewing machines for all students, but if you prefer to bring in your own machine, you are more than welcome! Materials Included: All fabric and batting, sewing machines for class use, and thread
Requirements: Just bring yourself, and your desire to create something fun and new!
Instructor: Rachel Burke
Instructor Bio: Rachel has been sewing since the age of seven. She began by stitching skirts and Halloween costumes with her mother, and quickly branched out into fiber arts of all kinds: cross stitching, weaving, beadwork, and bag construction. It wasn't until the Pandemic that Rachel discovered quilting, and quickly fell in love with the medium! She has now designed over 100 quilts, and has gained some national recognition after she won second place at the National Quilt Museum's New Quilts from an Old Favorite contest in 2022. Her style is modern and geometric, and shows off a true love of color!
