Sew a Tote Bag

Learn to make the Totes M'Goats quilted tote bag with this two-part class! These classes will cover all of the instructions for creating a unique, individualized, fun, and functional tote bag that will be the perfect accessory to hold all of your personalized items (hint: this is my favorite project bag for my sewing!). Class #1 will cover cutting out all of the pieces for the bag, as well as quilting the front and pocket panels on your domestic sewing machine using any technique you'd like to try (using straight line quilting, a walking foot, or free-motion quilting). In class #2, we'll take all of your quilted pieces and assemble them to create the finished bag. Learn how to make this fast, easy, beginner friendly bag for yourself or anyone else in your life!

Pattern is included in the price of the class. Fabric and interfacing must be purchased ahead of time. Pattern is written for quilting weight cotton fabric ONLY. Please see the Class Supply List for fabric requirements. You should have a working knowledge of your sewing machine (quilting knowledge or experience is not necessary), and a grasp of sewing basics, such as measuring and cutting fabric, pressing/ironing, and re-threading your machine.

Bring to class your fabric, sewing machine and all accessories, new needles for your machine, matching thread, fabric-marking tool (either a Hera marker or a water soluble pen), straight edge/no-slip rulers (optional), scissors, rotary cutter (optional), pins (straight and/or curved basting). Pattern will be supplied at the time of the class.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Participants should know the basics of sewing, including how to thread and use their sewing machine, how to sew to varying seam allowances, and how to change presser feet on their machines. Students need not have a quilting foot, or any experience with quilting. Comfort with pressing and ironing is also a must!

Instructor: Rachel Burke
Instructor Bio: Rachel has been sewing since the age of seven. She began by stitching skirts and Halloween costumes with her mother, and quickly branched out into fiber arts of all kinds: cross stitching, weaving, beadwork, and bag construction. It wasn't until the Pandemic that Rachel discovered quilting, and quickly fell in love with the medium! She has now designed over 100 quilts, and has gained some national recognition after she won second place at the National Quilt Museum's New Quilts from an Old Favorite contest in 2022. Her style is modern and geometric, and shows off a true love of color!
