Machine Binding 101 with Rachel
Do you suffer from FOB (Fear of Binding)? Well, we have the cure for you! In this class, you'll see Rachel demonstrate two simple and beautiful techniques for machine binding quilted pieces: French Binding and Flanged Binding.
The first class in this series will begin with the French or "Tuxedo" binding. Class will begin with the creation of a small quilt sandwich, which we will then lightly quilt (or even just tack down). Then, the fun begins! We will create a twist on a traditional binding, with a French, or "Tuxedo bind.
The second class will begin with another small quilt sandwich, but in Part 2 we will go over the instructions to create a stacked or Flanged bind. Rachel will be there to demonstrate these techniques for you, as well as to answer any questions you may have about binding. Eliminate your FOB, and finally feel confident putting that final "frame" around all of your quilted pieces!
Students should come to class with a sewing machine that they know how to thread and operate, a presser foot, thread, needles, and scissors. A walking foot or dual feed is not necessary, but it is recommended!

Skill Level: | Beginner |
Skill Details: | You should be able to thread your machine and bobbin, and change your own sewing machine needle. Knowledge of basting, and basic quilting, will be a plus, but is not necessary. We will begin the class by creating a quilt sandwich, and using our machines to quickly baste/quilt the sandwich together, but these steps will be explained in detail at the time, so even brand new quilters are more than welcome to attend! |
Materials Included: | Students will receive instructions for each binding technique. Please note: This class is divided into two separate days. |
Instructor: | Rachel Burke |
Instructor Bio: | Rachel has been sewing since the age of seven. She began by stitching skirts and Halloween costumes with her mother, and quickly branched out into fiber arts of all kinds: cross stitching, weaving, beadwork, and bag construction. It wasn't until the Pandemic that Rachel discovered quilting, and quickly fell in love with the medium! She has now designed over 100 quilts, and has gained some national recognition after she won second place at the National Quilt Museum's New Quilts from an Old Favorite contest in 2022. Her style is modern and geometric, and shows off a true love of color! |
